Common Questions About Testing
Where can I get tested in Miami?
The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County runs STI clinics at the Health District Center, 1350 NW 14th St., Suite 350, and West Perrine Health Center, 18255 Homestead Ave. Call 305-575-3800 to schedule. The department's STI page says it offers low or no-cost testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV.
Can I get tested without an appointment or without paying?
Care Resource at 3510 Biscayne Blvd. (305-576-1234) and Borinquen Medical Centers at 3601 Federal Hwy (305-576-6611) are listed by CDC GetTested as not requiring an appointment, and as offering free HIV and STI tests. Hours and costs can change, so call first and ask about fees and insurance.
How soon after exposure should I get tested?
Each infection has its own window period, the time after exposure before a test can detect it. The right timing depends on the infection and the test. A clinician, using CDC's STI Treatment Guidelines (2021), can explain which tests fit your situation and whether to repeat one later. Call a clinic, describe when the exposure happened, and ask.
Can a minor get tested confidentially in Florida?
Under Florida Statute 384.30, any minor may consent to examination and treatment for sexually transmissible diseases, with no minimum age. The statute says a minor's consultation, examination and treatment are confidential and may not be disclosed, for example by billing a parent or guardian, except as provided in section 384.29. Check with the clinic about its process.
Can I take an HIV test at home in Miami?
The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County offers a free HIV home test kit to county residents only, ordered online through its HIV Prevention page. Care Resource offers a no-cost home test for ages 14 and up in Miami-Dade or Broward; call 305-576-1234, ext. 352. A clinic can help with next steps after any result.
This page is general health information, not medical advice. It cannot tell you whether you have an infection. A clinician can, and the testing options on this site are a good place to start. If you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, go to an emergency department or urgent care now and ask about PEP.
